What happens when my loved one dies?2025-04-27T14:10:45+00:00

When someone dies the doctor who was treating them must refer to the death to The Medical Examiner who will scrutinize the cause of death and speak to the next of kin. Once this has happened they will send a Medical Certificate to the Register Office.  Sometimes if the death was sudden or the doctor treating the person who died is unavailable, the death will have to be reported to the Coroner first, which may lead to a delay in registering the death.

If the person died in the Bradford and Keighley Registration District you can register the death at City Hall, Bradford or Keighley Town Hall. If the person died in Halifax, you can register the death at Halifax Register Office.

Every death in England and Wales must be registered in the district where it happened within five days of the paperwork being sent to the Register Office.  The registrar will then record the information given by you.

By law one of these people must register a death:

  • A relative of the deceased
  • The partner of the deceased
  • The personal representative of the deceased
  • A person present at the death
  • The occupier of the care home / hospital where the death occurred
  • The person arranging the funeral

You need the following information to register a death:

  • The date and place of death

  • Their name and surname

  • Their usual address

  • Their maiden surname if they were a woman who had been married or in a registered civil partnership

  • Their date and place of birth

  • Their occupation

  • The name and occupation of spouse if they were married, widowed or in a registered civil partnership

  • The date of birth of the surviving widow, widower or civil partner

  • If they have a pension or allowance from public funds

  • Their NHS number, if you have it.

When you register a death you can buy one or more death certificates at a cost of £12.50 each.

The registrar will also issue a certificate for the burial or cremation of the body. You should give this to the Funeral Director or person who is making the arrangements. A funeral cannot proceed until this certificate is given to the burial authority or the crematorium.

Can we have a no fuss cremation like the ones advertised on TV with no attendees or service?2025-04-27T14:20:42+00:00

Absolutely, we can take care of your loved one, cremate them in a local crematorium and advise you of the date and time when this will take place.

Our consultations are always at a venue of your choice.

The deceased will be cared for in a chapel of rest.

Yes, you can visit the deceased at a mutually convenient time.

What about collecting charitable donations?2025-04-27T14:21:36+00:00

We, as your Funeral Director will take responsibility for managing and collecting any donations, if you wish. We will ensure everyone knows where, when and how to make a contribution and send the donations to your chosen charity.

Can my loved one be dressed in their own clothes?2025-04-27T14:21:54+00:00

Yes they can, alternatively we can dress the deceased in one of our gowns.

Am I able to place personal items into the coffin?2025-04-27T14:22:22+00:00

Yes, you can put personal items in the coffin, however, we cannot allow any metal and glass items.

Can family members carry the coffin?2025-04-27T14:22:35+00:00

Yes, family members can carry the coffin as long it is safe to do so on the day. We will talk through this option with you if this is something you would like to consider.

Can we choose the music to be played at the Crematorium?2025-04-27T14:22:54+00:00

Yes, the crematoriums have an excellent music system offered by Obitus. They can also arrange visual tributes and webcasting. A recording of the service may also be available on a DVD, USB or downloadable video.

Will we see the coffin being moved from the chapel after the service?2025-04-27T14:23:08+00:00

No, the coffin is not moved until all relatives and friends have left the chapel.

What happens with the cremated remains?2025-04-27T18:01:59+00:00

Providing there are no legal requirements, once these have been hand delivered to you, these can be:

  • Scattered in a special place of your own choice

  • Buried in a grave, allowing there to be a headstone

  • Scattered in the garden of remembrance at the crematorium

  • Kept at home in a special urn or memorial
