When someone dies the doctor who was treating them must refer to the death to The Medical Examiner who will scrutinize the cause of death and speak to the next of kin. Once this has happened they will send a Medical Certificate to the Register Office. Sometimes if the death was sudden or the doctor treating the person who died is unavailable, the death will have to be reported to the Coroner first, which may lead to a delay in registering the death.
